You’ve done the work to hire a family portrait photographer, the next step is choosing outfits that you feel amazing in. Making educated clothing choices can elevate photos and help everyone in the family feel and look more confident in front of the camera. I have some tips to help you coordinate outfits that you and your family will love and take the stress out of the decision making. All clients who book with me also receive a detailed Clothing Guide with additional guidance and an outfit consultation.

1. Pick a color scheme. Family photos look best when everyone is dressed in coordinating colors. Choose 3-5 colors that work well together. Muted tones and neutrals work the best. Check out my Pinterest page for color scheme examples.

2. Choose clothing that you are comfortable in. You should feel beautiful in whatever you decide to wear. Exuding confidence will show in your faces and body language. On a more literal note, also choose clothing that is comfortable to wear! Your family will thank you, and it will make for more relaxed, natural photos.

3. Dress a bit more elegant than you normally would. Family portraits are a big deal! I love when clients elevate themselves and wear fancier outfits. Think dresses, dress shoes, and a little extra polish with accessories.

4. Play with layers, textures, and patterns. These are all ways to get more variety for each family member within the color scheme. It adds depth and a luxurious touch to the overall look of your portraits. Just be careful to not use more than two patterns within your family so the look isn’t too busy.

5. Think classic. You want to love your family photos in twenty years as much as you do today. Classic outfits eschew trends and stand the test of time. Think traditional, flattering cuts, simple jewelry, and timeless colors. Logos, characters, and bright colors do not age well.

6. Consider where the photos will be displayed in your home. Look at your living spaces and what colors are on the walls, rugs, and furniture. Your color scheme should mesh well with the spaces that photos will be shown in.

7. Choose your outfits ahead of time. Having your clothing ready and ironed before the day of the session will help make getting out the door that much smoother. I recommend laying out the outfits together ahead of time to make sure they coordinate, and have everyone try them on to make sure they fit well and are comfortable.

I hope these recommendations are helpful! I am always available to my clients for outfit consultation to ensure that everyone looks and feels their best!
